La Unión Spanish School offers sports and cultural activities every afternoon and special excursions on holidays for its students. These activities provide students with more opportunities to practice Spanish and learn about the Guatemalan and Latin American culture.

Some of this activities are:

  • Salsa and Merengue dance lessons
  • Movies in Spanish (documentaries and feature films made in Guatemala and other Latin American countries)
  • Preparation of traditional Guatemalan food (e.g. how to make tortillas)
  • Scrabble in Spanish and other board games (see if you can beat your teacher)
  • Soccer/Basketball games (teachers vs. students – cheer your team on in Spanish)
  • Tours in Antigua Guatemala (churches, historical sites, nearby sites of interest)
  • Demonstrations of weaving typical Guatemalan clothes and explanations of each design
  • Visits to social projects, museums and Mayan ruins
  • Trips during the week to indigenous villages outside of Antigua Guatemala to see Mayan ceremonies and on the weekends to touristy places like Tikal and Monterrico (see our travel agency link for details about our longer excursions).
  • Tours with a guide to the volcanoes Pacaya, Agua and Fuego.
  • Bicycle tours to areas usually not frequented by tourists: e.g. coffee and macadamia nut plantations and more.
  • Preparation of traditional Guatemalan food (e.g. how to make
    tortillas)
  • Demonstrations of weaving typical Guatemalan clothes
  • Participate in a Mayan wedding ceremony
  • Learn about Mayan traditions
  • Participation in local holiday activities such as the festivities of the Holy Week (prior to Easter), Halloween, and Christmas
  • Salsa and Merengue dance lessons
  • Soccer/basketball games of teachers v. students
  • Climbing Hill of the Cross
  • Walking tours of Antigua and other nearby sites of interest
  • Bicycle tours of Antigua
  • Movie showings in Spanish
  • Scrabble and other board games in Spanish
  • Tours of macadamia nut and coffee plantations
  • Jade factory tour
  • Visit to the Azotea Museum to learn about coffee, jade, and Mayan music
  • Tour of Antigua in a “Chicken Bus”
  • Guided tour to climb the volcano Pacaya
